The crested pelican
With its bright orange throat pouch and wingspan of up to 3.5 meters, the crested pelican is an almost un-Dutch sight. Yet it was not so long ago that it lived here in the wild. Until the fifteenth century, this feathered giant could be found near Dutch river mouths and in the lowland moors along the coast.
A recent study shows that a return of this giant migratory bird is highly likely. This is not only good news for the Dalmatian pelican itself, but also for many other animals. The presence of this silvery-white pelican underscores the importance of further restoration of wetlands in our country. This will also benefit otters, spoonbills, purple herons, and numerous fish species.
ARK illustrator Jeroen Helmer outlined the return of this iconic species.
