The European bison a keystone species
In 2007, ARK, Duinbehoud, Kritisch Bosbeheer and PWN reintroduced bison to the Dutch countryside. The first herd lives in the dunes of Kraansvlak in Zuid-Kennemerland National Park. Since 2016, bison have also been living in the Veluwe and in the Brabant nature reserve De Maashorst, and since 2020 also on the Slikken van de Heen in Zeeland. Together with other grazers, the bison plays an important role in nature. ARK illustrator Jeroen Helmer captured this key role in his drawings.
