The grey whale and its key role in shallow seas
The grey whale was once found in large numbers in Dutch waters and specialises in foraging in shallow waters with muddy bottoms. With thousands of kilos of faeces per animal per day, it makes a substantial contribution to the diet of the diatoms and phytoplankton that form the basis of the food web. In this way, the grey whale also secures its future food supply.
