The living North Sea
The North Sea is the largest natural area of the Netherlands. It is home to 220 different species of fish, from thornback ray to sea bass. Seals, whales, dolphins and porpoises are regularly seen, and the sea and its surroundings are also teeming with birds, crabs, lobsters, shellfish, molluscs and other invertebrates. This illustration shows how important shellfish reefs are for marine nature.
ARK, through its North Sea Programme, works together with other sea users to combine food production and nature development at sea. The foundation of the programme is the expansion of reefs. Reefs make nature more vital and resilient. This is necessary because the North Sea is one of the busiest seas in the world, a source of food for humans and animals, and on top of that, space is reserved for a large number of wind turbines.
In the illustration ‘Living North Sea’, ARK illustrator Jeroen Helmer visualised the role of the shellfish reef.
