Riverwood the key rol of dead wood in the river

Dead wood underwater is a natural feature of the Dutch landscape. Various species of insects and fish find their habitat on and around this wood. River wood forms the basis of the food chain for life in the river. Invertebrates settle on the wood and filter the floating algae from the flowing water. This makes nutrients available to animals higher up the food chain, such as fish, herons, cormorants, ospreys and otters. The dead trees in the river therefore play an important role in nature.
