The sturgeon the flagship species of migratory fish
The European Atlantic sturgeon used to be widespread in all the major rivers of Western Europe, but it became extinct almost everywhere due to water pollution, overfishing, dams and river straightening. Water quality has since improved, but the sturgeon is highly sensitive. If it survives, the rivers will also be suitable for other migratory fish.
