Map of 'Gelderse Poort' and Millingerwaard
In the 1990s, the first steps were taken towards nature conservation in the Gelderse Poort. In the wake of large-scale sand and clay extraction and the lowering of floodplains to improve flood protection, a great deal of space was freed up for new nature. A rich nature reserve has since emerged here, where visitors are free to wander off the beaten track in many places.
This map invites walkers and cyclists to (re)discover the Gelderse Poort; the area between Arnhem, Nijmegen, Zevenaar and Kleve. Here, the Rhine flows into the Netherlands, flanked by extensive stretches of river dunes, floodplain forests and flower-filled grasslands.
These areas have changed significantly over the past 10 years, partly due to the Room for the River project, with new (wandering) nature and surprising cycling and walking opportunities. In collaboration with ARK, Stroming has recompiled and published the walking and cycling map for the Gelderse Poort. The routes on the map have been specially selected to offer the best possible experience of the beauty that the Gelderse Poort has to offer.
In addition to a ‘standard’ map, this edition includes a hand-drawn, unique detailed map by ARK illustrator Jeroen Helmer.
